The headline is a bit deceiving. The studies show that although a smaller portion of the Black population is living in virtually all-Black ghettos and fewer all-White enclaves exist, there’s still little integration between Black and White communities. Asians and
Hispanics are breaking up those all-White enclaves, a phenomenon more or less predicted by Bonilla Silva in his book “Racism without Racists.” What we’re seeing is the movement of other ethnicities, especially the lighter skinned of those ethnicities, above what is considered the ultimate low, Blacks. The message from this news should be clear: desegregation is possible, living in homo-ethnic communities is not just “choice,” and more effort needs to be made to bring real desegregation to Black communities.
