Ivory Coast's child labor linked to chocolate

Despite the horrors of child labor practices, there is another equally devastating aspect to this problem. Child labor normally rises out of a need for families to get extra income either because the current income doesn’t meet needs or adults at home are unable to work for whatever reason. In regions where social security programs are virtually unheard of and education is a paid for luxury, there’s few other options for families to turn to except child labor. Laws banning child labor, and organizations enforcing these laws, will do little to solve the root cause of the problem: extreme poverty and a lack of social services for the poor. With that we have to ask ourselves how helpful are laws or businesses with policies against child labor if they do not also support economic improvement in these same regions?
