I don’t have the energy, or luxury of time, to be angry at what environment I was raised in. But, knowing so much more after the fact, revisiting my old Bronx neighborhood is both exciting and disappointing.

The excitement comes from having a much better idea of what was happening around me…

This is the capstone to our Marijuana in NYC series on The Blinker. The article discusses a comprehensive view of the opportunity costs of the NYPD’s pursuit of pot possession arrests.

The costs aren’t just limited to equipment or hours spent. We’re talking about tax payer and human costs as well. We’re discussing, ultimately, a compromise of the state’s ethics and morals in the oxymoronic pursuit of community improvement through mass arrests. We’re talking about using cash from private entities to finance unnecessary taxpayer incarceration. Ultimately, this system is toxic and unsustainable.

Receipts, receipts, we got em, quite literally. Here are four receipts which have gone public via internet in the recent past:

“Ching” and “Chong” — That’s what Chick-Fil-A labelled two UC Irvine students in December 2011. The image was posted on the internet, blogged on tumblr, and the offending employee named Lia got fired amid much defensive PR fluff from Chick-Fil-A.

“Lady Chinky Eyes” — That’s how Papa John’s in New York City referred to Minhee Cho in January 2012. Cho tweeted the receipt, prompting Papa John’s to post on apology on its Facebook page and terminate the offending employee.

“Chinx” — That’s how Hooters in Fresh Meadows, Queens, described Kisuk Cha and his girlfriend when they ordered wings and shrimp there in September 2012. Cha sued. The employee resigned and as far as I know the lawsuit is ongoing.

“Ching Chong Lee” — That’s what CVS in New Jersey named Hyun Jin Lee in February 2013. Following Cha’s example, Lee has filed a lawsuit. CVS says the employee will be “counseled and trained”.

They keep giving us these receipts and we’ll keep filing lawsuits. Let’s do this.

I know there’s 400 years of slavery that we’re unique to, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to understand personal boundaries, or how frequently they’re broken, especially for Black women.

The news site I edit for did a series this month on Marijuana prohibition in NYC.

I really like the series because we got a chance to approach marijuana from a human costs perspective. The costs often get overshadowed by what I would call the “clowning” of it. Cheech and Chong imagery of just stupidly getting stoned and hunting food.

What we hoped to reveal was a much more darker reality of how marijuana prohibition plays into a larger oppressive system against everyone, but even more specifically vulnerable groups of low income or colored people.

What’s revealed is a sad incidence of equality failure. A failure that contributes to the larger difficulty of socioeconomic progress in America. The series isn’t over yet, we’ll be publishing another comprehensive closing piece this Wednesday.
